Artist's Description

The Japanese Tower is a surprising sight in the Brussels landscape. Like the nearby Chinese Pavilion it was built at the beginning of the 20th century, supervised by King Léopold II.

The pavilion at the entrance was acquired at the World Fair of Paris in 1900. Its construction was done in 1901 by the French architect Alexandre Marcel. The outside architectural ornamentation, like the sculptured panels or the decorated brass patches, was realized in Japan. The internal decoration is done in Art nouveau style, a very fashionable style at the time. Lots of Japanese trees are planted around the Tower.

Inaugurated in 1905, the Japanese Tower now shelters collections of china and Japanese and Chinese ceramic of the 17th and 18th century. There is also furniture from the 19th and 20th century.

The Japanese Tower, the Chinese Pavilion and the Museum of Japanese Art together form the Museums of the Far East.
